DEPUTY LORD MAYOR WELCOMES DECISION TO EXTEND LIBRARY OPENING HOURS IN DUBLIN'S NORTHSIDE
- Friday 23 March 2007
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Aodhán Ó Ríordáin , has welcomed the decision by Dublin City Public Libraries to extend the opening hours of four libraries on the Northside of Dublin. From 24th March, Charleville Mall and Drumcondra Libraries will open every Saturday. Marino and Phibsboro libraries will open every Friday from today on.
Councillor Ó Ríordáin has made tackling educational disadvantage central to his term as Deputy Lord Mayor. In October 2006, he launched the Right to Read campaign, which identified the need for improvements in library services, homework clubs and social housing.
Cllr Ó Ríordáin is a primary school resource teacher in the North Inner City and has first-hand experience of the problems which result in poor literacy levels.
"This decision to extend the opening hours of these libraries is a huge boost to these communities, in particular young children. It is also another milestone in the Right to Read campaign, which was endorsed by Dublin City Council in November 2006," says Councillor Ó Ríordáin.
The success of the campaign is being recognised nationally, and on Monday 26th March, Councillor Ó Ríordáin travels to Limerick to present the campaign to Limerick City Council.
