RIGHT TO READ CAMPAIGN WELCOMES THE OPENING OF LEARNING ZONES AND HOMEWORK CLUBS IN NINE DUBLIN LIBRARIES

The founder of the Right to Read Campaign has welcomed the opening of nine new learning zones in Dublin City libraries that will provide homework support for children.

Homework clubs are one of the three key aims of the Right to Read Campaign which was successful in lobbying for a €1 million investment in the library service last year.

‘Research clearly shows a need for dedicated child friendly spaces in libraries, supported by specially chosen reading and reference materials, together with access to appropriate educational websites and other computer software. Children often find their homes less than conducive to study and do homework and the Right to Read Campaign believe the new learning zones will provide a welcoming environment to which learning can be encouraged.’ Cllr O Riordain said.

Nine learning zones will be put in place by the end of 2007 in the following branch libraries: Charleville Mall, Raheny, Walkinstown, Ballyfermot, Coolock, Rathmines, Dolphin’s Barn, Finglas and Ballymun.
